The original and authentic espadrille has been handcrafted in the villages of southern France and northern Spain – the Basque region - since 13th century.

The Art of Soule espadrilles are manufactured in the town of Mauléon-Licharre, southwestern France.

The espadrilles are manufactured by hand, like their forefathers used to make them, and the forefathers before them. The espadrilles have been manufactured in the same town for the past 800 years.

The historical and cultural significance of the espadrille makes Art of Soule a genuine heritage brand; a proudly hand-crafted French product.

The espadrille shoe is made of:

• a jute rope sole – tough enough for shoe soles, but soft enough to be comfortable;
• natural rubber – customized rubber soles with a Made in France emblem which are heat-pressed onto the rope sole for more durability; and
• woven cotton canvas with a 400-thread count – customised to make the uppers of the espadrilles.

Art of Soule designs all the fabrics for their espadrilles in conjunction with designers and the factory workers’ input. One metre of fabric is required for the manufacture of a pair of espadrilles. The tailors cut out and prepare the espadrille uppers – a key skill in the production of traditional espadrilles. They then skilfully sew the cotton canvas on to the jute soles.  

In the 1960s, Hollywood stars like Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth and Lauren Bacall joined the likes of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali and began wearing espadrilles, which transformed the espadrille shoe into a chic classic, and it has remained that way since. More recently, Kate Middleton and Anna Wintour have been seen wearing the timeless, flat espadrille.

All Art of Soule espadrilles come with a six (6) month warranty. This covers manufacturing faults but excludes normal wear and tear or incorrect use of the espadrilles. Incorrect use includes failing to follow the HOW DO I CARE FOR MY ART OF SOULE ESPADRILLES? guide.

If you deem your espadrilles to be defective, you have six (6) months from purchase date to notify us by email at info@artofsoule.co.za together with a photo of the defective item and proof of purchase.

If our team finds that the espadrilles are defective, you will be advised whether the product can be repaired and/or whether it will need to be replaced. You also have the option of a refund/or credit. Art of Soule will be liable for the delivery charges if the product is found to be defective. The decision between repairing or replacing will be that of Art of Soule depending on availability and other relevant circumstances.

Our Art of Soule team is really efficient in getting orders dispatched. You are welcome to send through any changes to your order, but they will only be actioned if your order has not already been dispatched. Changes to orders can be emailed to info@artofsoule.co.za.

Espadrilles aren’t too hard to care for, but it is good to know how to clean your espadrilles so that you don’t unintentionally damage them.

Since espadrilles are made out of natural fabrics, they should not be put into a washing machine.

Instead, put some soap on a damp towel and wipe the dirt off. Take care when working around the jute because vigorous scrubbing can fray the jute.

If your espadrilles get wet, set them in a dry place and stick rolled up cloth inside them until they are dry. The cloth will help with both the drying process and ensure that the upper fabric doesn’t shrink.

When storing your espadrilles, ensure that they are thoroughly dry before storing them, and that they are stored in a dry and well-ventilated space, avoiding high humidity.

Absolutely. We import our Art of Soule espadrilles from France, and frequently place new orders. If we do not have the Art of Soule espadrilles you are looking for, will gladly include it them in our next order. Our Art of Soule espadrilles are shipped via ocean freight, so the lead time is approximately four to six weeks.

Staying true to the original authentic espadrilles, Art of Soule espadrilles do not distinguish between the right and the left foot. Although over time you will find they mould in the sole, feeling more comfortable one way round.

Fit 
While espadrilles are typically comfortable right out of the box, they can sometimes feel a little tight or snug. If you experience this, there are several ways to stretch them out, since the espadrilles are made with a cotton canvas that has a bit of stretch in it.

Sizing
The Art of Soule espadrilles are designed to fit the below sizes. Some styles may vary from these measurements but they can still be used as a guide.

If you wear a half size, are between sizes, we suggest ordering the next size up.

NORMAL RETURNS:

If, for some reason, you wish to return your Art of Soule espadrilles, you will need to notify us within 5 days of receipt of your order. You may choose between a purchase price refund, product exchange or credit. You will need to return the Art of Soule espadrilles to our offices in Johannesburg via courier/or by hand, at your own cost.

Please retain the espadrilles’ original packaging, and do not wear the product. Please also ensure the items are returned in the exact condition they were received in in order to secure your refund, product exchange or credit.

If the incorrect product is delivered to you in error (i.e. it is not the product you purchased) please do not remove the espadrilles from their original packaging or try the product on at all. Please email info@artofsoule.co.za to notify us of the error so that we
can arrange collection of the espadrilles and deliver the correct one to you as soon as possible.

If your Art of Soule espadrilles were purchased from one of our stockists and you would like to arrange an exchange, please return to the store and they will gladly assist.
